NFL Teams Up with Responsible Gambling Council to Educate Student Athletes
Student-athletes face unique challenges from balancing academics, athletics, and the increasing accessibility of sports betting, which can make them vulnerable to risky gambling behaviors, said Sarah McCarthy, CEO of the Gambling Council.
Addressing Risky Gambling Behaviors
In response, the Gambling Council and the NFL are collaborating to create a responsible gambling training program tailored specifically for university and college student-athletes. The program will launch with a pilot phase at eight Canadian universities and colleges during the 2025 spring semester.
“Our partnership with the NFL is a vital step toward supporting student-athletes by providing education and tools to help them make informed choices,” McCarthy explained. “Introducing responsible gambling education early helps build their capacity to succeed both on and off the field.”
Expanding the Program
Depending on feedback from the pilot, the Gambling Council plans to expand the initiative to 30 institutions during the 2025-26 academic year.
“Our shared goal is to equip student-athletes with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate gambling risks, fostering a safer and more responsible environment,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility. “We also aim to gather insights that will inform future responsible gambling efforts for players and fans alike.”
Program Features
The Gambling Council will develop the program, ensuring that trainers are well-prepared to deliver the material effectively. It will include interactive sessions, videos, and other engaging content designed to help student-athletes better understand gambling risks, recognize signs of gambling harm, and appreciate the impact on themselves, their families, and friends. Additionally, the program will highlight their unique vulnerabilities and provide resources for support in cases of gambling-related harm.
