The Round of 32 explained

Because 2026 runs with 48 teams, the knockouts open with a fresh round. Twelve group winners, twelve runners-up and the eight best third-placed sides — 32 in all — meet in 16 one-off ties. Level after 90 minutes means 30 minutes of extra time, then penalties.

When is the World Cup 2026 Round of 32?

The 1/16 final runs from 28 June to 3 July 2026 — the first knockout round of the expanded 48-team tournament.

How is a 1/16 final tie decided if it ends level?

After 90 minutes level, 30 minutes of extra time is played in two halves. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides who advances.
