Crown Resorts Officially Appoints Tsai as Permanent CEO

Crown Resorts has officially named David Tsai as its permanent chief executive, following his initial appointment as interim CEO on September 1, after Ciarán Carruthers resigned. Carruthers announced his departure in late August and will fully leave the company by December 31. Tsai’s permanent appointment is subject to necessary regulatory approvals.

David Tsai joined Crown in December 2022 as CEO of its Perth operations. In August this year, he was promoted to president and group chief operating officer before stepping into the acting CEO role.

Prior to Crown, Tsai spent nearly three years as president of MGM Resorts’ Midwest Group. He also held leadership roles as president and COO of MGM Grand Detroit and MGM Northfield Park, as well as at Gold Strike Casino Resort. His experience includes senior vice president and CFO positions at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, and vice president of strategic development at Aria Resort and Casino. Earlier in his career, Tsai held various senior corporate roles within the MGM group.

Crown chairman John Borghetti welcomed Tsai’s appointment, praising his strong commercial acumen, strategic expertise, and leadership values. Borghetti expressed confidence in Tsai’s ability to guide Crown through its ongoing transformation and growth.

Tsai said his focus as permanent CEO will be driving the next phase of Crown’s development. “With the support of our talented and committed team, we aim to make Crown Resorts the premier entertainment destination in each of our cities, ensuring long-term success,” he said.

This announcement follows recent regulatory challenges for Crown in Victoria. The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission fined Crown AU$2 million for allowing self-excluded players to gamble, a breach of state rules. An investigation revealed that 242 self-excluded individuals were able to place bets on multiple occasions at Crown Melbourne, with a total of 427 self-excluded persons entering Crown venues in 750 instances.
